In 1998 I purchased a John Deere LX 173 5 speed. The delivered price was $2815.00.
I still have the tractor and it’s like new but I just got the “hots” for something newer.
The LX 173 was/is a great little machine. My JD Dealer told me that the equivalent today was the X300. However, after seeing and driving the X304 I was sold on the four wheel turning.
The final deal was $3580.00 including Ohio tax and a FREE #7 wagon.
The X304 was delivered recently and I am already in love with it. I think my LX173 is jealous.
Not only does nothing run like a Deere…nothing lasts like a Deere.
Worth every dollar I paid.
Martin, from Lawn Tractor Buyers Guide adds:
Thanks for your input Larry. It’s much appreciated.
That’s a great deal you got there too. Deere.com is showing $3,599 plus taxes, freight, set up and delivery. Your dealer effectively paid the tax and threw in the wagon.
You got 13 years out of your LX173. Looking at what you paid for it, that’s around $217 per year and it’s not finished yet.
If you get the same service out of your JD X304, that’ll work out at around a maximum of $275 per year (just over $5 per week) – a pretty good return on investment I’d say.
I think the question of reliablity and long service is an important one for buyers to think about.
I know it’s good to save money up front. But if you spend say, $2,000 on a lawn tractor, and it lasts only 4 years, that’s $500 per year for the use of an inferior machine.
As to the features of the JD X304, that steering is certainly very sweet. Another reviewer also mentioned the stability of the X304 as a good factor and I reckon that it is very true too.
Hope you enjoy working with your JD X304. Keep us posted with any updates.
