The x300 Series of John Deere riding mowers takes the position in the John Deere range formerly occupied by the likes of the popular GT and the 300 Series, which included the innovative John Deere 318 lawn tractor.
Part of John Deere’s premium ‘Select Series’ of lawn tractors, there are nine X300 models (although not all models are available in all countries).
These machines are generally considered suitable for the smaller and more intricate landscapes – for which the two 4-wheel steer models, the X304 and the X324 are ideally suited. However, the X300 series of John Deere riding mowers does include the X340, which is recommended for areas of up to four acres (16,000m2).
Here we cover the X320, X324, X360 and X340 models.

All X300 series John Deere riding mowers feature:
- A heavy-duty welded frame
- The John Deere iTorquetm Power System, designed for a quieter, smoother ride
- Internal wet disc brakes
- A 15in (381mm) open back seat
- An electric clutch power take off
- Electronic ignition
- A rear-positioned fuel tank
- The easy use John Deere Twin Touchtm transmission, which consists of two pedals – one for forward and one for reverse
- Standard hour meter to show when maintenance tasks are due
- Colour coded controls
- Cargo Mounttm System for ease of use of rear attachments.
With a top speed of 5.8mph (9.3km/h going forward and 3.5mph (5.6km/h) in reverse and weighing in at 681lb (309kg), the X320 is the mid-range model in the X300 Series. It has a decent sized 48in (122cm) cutting deck and a pretty nimble 16in (40cm) turning circle, which makes it an efficient operator in its class.
Owners praise the X320 for its:
- ease of use
- excellent turning circle
- grass collection system
- smooth cut
The X324 features Deere’s low effort 4-wheel steer system. This means that because all wheels turn together in response to a turn of the steering wheel, it boasts a narrow turning circle with an exceptional uncut circle radius of only 9in (23cm).
This gives the X324 manoeuvrability which is not far short of that of a zero turn mower, but with the power and stability to cope with the rougher terrains that zero turns cannot generally manage.
Although otherwise similar to the X320, for example in its maximum speeds and dimensions, the additional steering mechanisms mean that the X324 is a fair bit heavier at 739lb (335Kg).
The X324 gets a good rap from reviewers for its:
- turning ability
- power, even when mulching
- ease of servicing
- speed at getting the job done
With similar dimensions and engine power to the X320 and X324, the X360 differs in that it has a hydraulic power and tilt steering system which makes it steer a bit like a car. It also has a hydraulic power lift for easy control of the mower deck (or front blade and snow attachments, if fitted).
Users especially like the X360’s:
- power steering stability on hills and uneven ground
- hydraulic equipment lift
- engine power
With the most powerful engine (25hp) and widest standard cutting deck (54in or 137cm), the X340 is the most suitable model in the x300 Series of John Deere riding mowers for larger areas. Nevertheless, it still has a respectably tight turn – with a turning radius of 16in (41cm) and uncut circle radius of 18in (46cm). By both measures this is appreciably better that the X320 and x360.
Reviewers highlight the X340’s:
- good turning circle
- wide deck for shorter mowing time
- powerful engine
There is plenty of versatility in the x300 range of John Deere riding mowers with a good spread of features and prices.
Backed by the John Deere four year/400 hour warranty and 30-day return promise, these John Deere riding mowers are popular and well-regarded and provide good value for money.
